Established Cleft Facts

  • A cleft occurs during the 4th to the 8th week of pregnancy
  • Some clefts are caused by environmental factors, others by genetics
  • Fathers, as well as mothers, can pass on genes that cause clefts
  • Most cleft-affected babies are boys. However, it is not uncommon for a girl to be born with a cleft
  • A person (male or female) born with a cleft that has no obvious cause has a greater chance of having a child with a cleft (1:700)
  • Women who ingest too much Vitamin A and not enough folic acid are more likely to have children with a cleft
